History of the
Bates
Brass Wire Stapler
Without a doubt, the Bates brass wire stapler was the best stapler ever made. The first machines, the model "A" using steel wire, were made up until about the 1920’s. In the late 1920’s the Model "B" was introduced using steel wire for a short time. Brass wire appeared later and is still being used to this day. In 1936 the Model "C" was manufactured and made until about 1968. Since the B-50 refills are no longer in production it is important to save the empty reels because we rewind them.
These machines are highly regarded by people who use them and know the advantages. Attorneys and accountants state that less room is needed in the files where the smaller brass staple is used. Some industries where rust could be a problem, like the garment industry, the brass wire staple is an advantage. Also, the 5,000 staples with one refill is appealing. The use of shredders make them popular since steel staples damage the cutters.
We are constantly asked about the value of these staplers. To our knowledge, there is no commercial guidelines for valuation of these staplers. However, we do many repairs and occasionally sell them. If you are looking for antique or collector's values you should contact an auction house that deals with this type of item for an accurate assessment.
These machines are surely a classic and are becoming a "Collectors Item." I sold the model "C" machines until production stopped and then I started to collect them as well as repairing and selling rebuilt machines and B-50 refills.
Generally we have rebuilt units for sale and occasionally find a new one for that special occasion like graduation, retirement, or years of service. If you already own a Bates Brass Wire staple, check out our R&Ds Hot Rod adaptation of a Model C stapler.
